The Navratra Recipe – Spicy Vegetable Samak Rice

Preparing samak rice can be healthy. All you need to do is bring a little twist in the traditional preparation methods:

Here is a recipe for traditional samak rice. You can make the recipe healthier and tastier via adding the following ingredients:

Samak Rice Recipe

–          Serving Size – 2-4

–          Cooking time -15-20 minutes

Ingredients Required

  • Samak Rice – 1/2 cup
  • Refined oil – 2 tsp
  • Green chillies – 2 chopped
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Kala namak(rock salt) – 1 tsp
  • Boiled potato (diced) – 1 or 2
  • Peas boiled – ½ cup
  • Carrots diced – ½ cup
  • Beans diced – 4
  • Cinnamon stick – 1 small
  • Cloves – 2
  • Bay leaf – 1
  • Cardamom – 1 black
  • Peanuts- half cup
  • Curry leaves – 4-5
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing

Preparation Method

Step 1: Take a pan and add refined oil in it.

Step 2: Add cumin seeds, cloves, bay leaf, cardamoms and cinnamon.

Step 3: Stir till u start getting the aroma.

Step 4: Add in curry leaves, and peanuts. Stir for some time.

Step 5: Add potatoes, carrots, and beans. Stir fry for some time.

Step 6: Add rice.

Step 7: Now add salt and black pepper powder.

Step 8: Add 2 cups of water.

Step 9: Lower the flame and allow it to simmer for about 15 minutes.

Step 10: Make sure whole of the water is absorbed.

Step 11: In case you feel that rice is not cooked properly then add more water and cook for a while.

Step 12: Check and remove from flame.

Step 13: Serve hot with green chutney and curd or raita.

Since we have added vegetables apart from the usual potatoes, the nutritional value of samak rice pulao has increased.
