Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a beautiful phase. However, it is important that you take care of a lot of things to ensure healthy development of foetus and problem free delivery. Diet and nutrition plays an important role during pregnancy. Most people around you and health experts would provide you a list of foods that you must eat during pregnancy. However, do you know about foods that you should avoid during pregnancy?

There are some foods you should not eat when you’re pregnant. This is because they might make you ill or even harm your baby.

Foods to Avoid

Cheese

There are certain types of cheese that you should avoid during pregnancy. Strictly avoid eating mould-ripened soft cheese such as brie, camembert etc. This also includes mould-ripened soft cheese prepared from goats’ milk. It is also important to avoid soft blue-veined cheeses such as gorgonzola, Danish blue, and roquefort.

These are prepared from mould and can consist of listeria, a type of bacteria that may harm your unborn baby.

Eggs

Strictly avoid uncooked or undercooked eggs. The egg whites should be cooked thoroughly and whites and yolks need to be solid before you consume them. This will prevent the risk of salmonella food poisoning.

Meat

Uncooked or undercooked meat is harmful for you and the foetus during pregnancy. You should cook meat and poultry thoroughly to the point that it is steaming hot and there is no trace of pink or blood. Also avoid including cold cured meats such as salami, parma ham and pepperoni in your diet.

Vitamin A Supplements

Strictly avoid taking high-dose multivitamin supplements. Fish liver oil supplements or any supplements containing vitamin A are harmful for your health and that of foetus during pregnancy.

Fish

Certain types of fish such as marlin, shark, and swordfish should be avoided during pregnancy. Also limit the amount of tuna you eat.

Peanuts

It is good to avoid peanuts and foods containing peanuts during pregnancy. This is because eating peanuts during pregnancy affects the chances of your baby developing a peanut allergy.

Unpasteurised milk

Stay away from unpasteurised or UHT (ultra-heat treated) milk during pregnancy.

Soil Foods

You must avoid foods with soil on them. You need to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly to remove all traces of soil and visible dirt before consuming them.

Caffeine

High levels of caffeine can result in babies having a low birth weight. Additionally, too much caffeine can also result in miscarriage. So avoid too much of coffee, tea and chocolate during pregnancy.
