Eating fruits and vegetables are healthy! This is what most of us have believed for so long. Of course, these are healthy but there are hidden dangers that we should be aware of in order to avoid health complications. Some may contain poisons that make you sick, paralyze and even kill you! Here are some of the hidden dangers in everyday fruits and vegetables:


Nutmeg contains myristicine, a psychoactive. Too much of it will cause serious health symptoms such as sweating, vomiting, dizziness, hallucinations and headache.

Lima Beans

Before eating these, you need to cook them really well. Raw beans contain a product called limarin. Only a handful of these are enough to make someone violently ill. Hence, make sure they have been cooked at least 10 minutes. Strictly avoid adding these to raw salads.

Cassava Root

Cassava (also called manioc or yucca) is the third most consumed food across the globe. Did you know it consists of cyanide? Unless processed in a certain way, it can kill. There are two types of cassava root; sweet and bitter. The bitter has more cyanide. You should stay away from this potent poison.

Kidney Beans

These comprise of a toxin phytohaemagglutinin, which will make you extremely ill. In some rare cases, it has even killed people. So make sure these beans are boiled for 10 minutes before cooking. This includes slow cooking. Since these beans become five times more toxic when heated to the temperatures used in slow cooking as compared to when raw, so never just add them to a stew or chilli without boiling them first.


The ingredient theobromine is dangerous to dogs and cats. If you love your furry friends, keep away from it.


Green on the skins and sprouting potatoes contain solanine that develops with exposure to light. No wonder potatoes are always kept in a cool, dark place. Eat too much of these can result in digestive problems or even death.


The leaves and vines of tomato plants are dangerous as they contain alkaloid poisons such as atropine. The element cause dizziness, headaches and even upset tummies. Green tomatoes are dangerous.


Eating the seeds are dangerous as they contain cyanogenic glycosides causing cyanide. Consuming too much of it can make you ill and is fatal!
