Tricks to Cook Brown Rice – The Essence of Eating Healthy

Most people find it quite difficult to cook brown rice. The healthy food item takes more (read hours) time to cook as compared to white rice. Well, if you have decided to shake hands with this healthiest form of rice, there are many different methods to prepare it.

Stated below is the most efficient way to cook brown rice on a stove.  And yes, it takes only about 35 minutes from when you start to when you’re eating (this is quite decent for brown rice). This method works for both short grain and long grain brown rice.

How to Cook:

Step 1: Put brown rice and water together in a pot with a lid.

Step 2: Use the ratio of 1.5 cups water to 1 cup rice.

Step 3: You need to set the heat to maximum, and bring the rice/water to a boil. Do this uncovered.

Step 4: Put the lid on the pot, and reduce the heat to low/simmer.

Step 5: Allow the rice to simmer for 20 minutes.

Step 6: Remove the lid after 10 minutes.

Step 7: Eat and enjoy.

Tip: Soak brown in water overnight to reduce the time of cooking.

Healthy Brown Rice Recipe

Here’s a recipe that you would enjoy adding to your diet. It is easy to prepare and healthy.

Brown Rice Pulao

Serves: 02

Cooking time: 40 mins

Ingredients:

Brown rice – 1 cup

Fresh chopped coriander leaves – 1 cup

Fresh chopped mint leaves – ¼ cup

Chopped garlic – 4 cloves

Green chillies – 1 chopped

Olive oil – 1 tbsp

Stick cinnamon – 1/2 inch

Green cardamoms – 2

Cloves 5-6

Chopped ginger – ½ inch

Carrot, scraped and cubed – 1 medium size

Florets of cauliflower – 5-6 small

Salt to taste

French beans ½ pieces – 3-4

Preparation Method

Step 1: Soak brown rice in two and half cups of water for two hours.

Step 2: Drain and set aside.

Step 3: Grind coriander leaves, mint leaves, garlic and green chillies to a fine paste.

Step 4: Heat oil in a pan.

Step 5: Add cinnamon, green cardamoms, cloves and ginger and sauté till fragrant.

Step 6: Add carrot, cauliflower and brown rice and mix well.

Step 7: Add three tablespoons of green chutney and salt and stir to mix well.

Step 8: Add French beans and mix well.

Step 9: Allow the mixture come to a boil. Now reduce heat, cover and cook till the rice is done.

Step 10: Serve hot.
