1. Take a Break
Now that you have decided to take a new responsibility, it is time to take off before you actually get busy with changing diapers, visiting doctors, spending sleepless nights and other motherly responsibilities. Plan a vacation with your partner and spend some time together. Cherish this time together as you may have to wait for some time before you can be together again.
2. The Preconception Visit
This is something most people don’t focus on. However, a pre-conception visit is absolutely important. You must allow your practitioner to review your personal and family medical history, your present health, and any medications you’re taking. Understand that certain medications are dangerous during pregnancy. Some may even have to be switched before you try to conceive.
3. The Folic Acid
You must take a folic acid supplement. Taking 400 mcg of folic acid a day for at least one month before you conceive and during your first trimester can reduce your chances of having a baby with neural-tube defects. Ask your healthcare provider to recommend a supplement.
4. No Indulgences
It is important to give up on your bad habits such as smoking, drinking, and drugs. Not adhering to this rule will affect your as well as baby’s health. Some of the major side effects include increased chances of miscarriage, premature birth, and low-birth weight babies.
5. Love Healthy Foods
This is the right time to develop a liking for healthy foods. Make sure you stock your fridge with healthy foods. Start making nutritious food choices so that your body gets all the necessary nutrients required for healthy pregnancy. So you need to emphasise on having at least 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables every day. You must also get plenty of whole grains and foods high in calcium such as milk, calcium-fortified orange juice, and yogurt. Also eat a variety of protein sources, such as beans, nuts, seeds, soy products, poultry, and meats.
6. No Caffeine
If you are a caffeine addict, it is important that you cut down on your caffeine consumption. High caffeine consumption results in decreased fertility.
7. Watch Out your Weight
Being overweight and underweight is not good for pregnancy. Speak to your gynaecologist and make sure your BMI (Body Mass Index) is in healthy range.
8. An Exercise Regime
You must prepare your body for pregnancy. Join some exercise classes, aerobics or yoga to keep your body in good shape. This will also help you ensure flexibility in your body.
9. Prepare yourself Mentally
This is very important. You must prepare yourself mentally for getting pregnant. Feel happy about this new development in life. Try shopping a little. This will make you feel good about the forthcoming changes in your life.
