Understanding Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini yoga is a rage in the western countries at present. It was founded Yogi Bhajan in 1969, founded wherein with 3HO (the Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization), he introduced this yoga practice to a broader population. It was an attempt on the part of Bhajan to spread awareness about the benefits if this yoga.

The Kundalini is also referred to as the untapped energy (prana) that rests at the base of the spine. This can be easily drawn up through awakening of body each of the seven chakras. Full enlightenment occurs when this energy reaches the crown chakra right at the top of the head. Essentially, Kundalini energy is represented as a snake coiled right at the bottom of the spine.

The Breath and Movement Focus
Each Kundalini Yoga asana series is accomplished with a specific breathing technique that intensifies effects of the poses with the purpose of freeing energy right in the lower body and allowing it to move upwards.The Kundalini sequences, also referred to as kriyas comprises of rapid, repetitive movements. These are performed in conjunction with a designated breathing technique. One needs to hold on to a specific pose while breathing in a specific way.

What goes in a Kundalini Class?A typical Kundalini class starts off with a short chant. It is followed by a warm-up to stretch the spine and improve flexibility. The main work of the class is referred to as a kriya. It is actually a proscribed sequence of poses. Pranayama emphasises on a specific area of the body.

The class ends with a meditation session. This is accompanied by the instructor playing a large gong. A closing song is also played. Devotees of Kundalini are supposed to wear flowing white robes and head wraps. This is just a ritual and not an obligation for participants. The style of dress depends on your comfort level.
